It will also look into the levying of municipal taxes during and immediately after World War II. The investigation of the other municipalities began in May of this year.
From the publication of the so-called ‘Verkaufsbücher’ by the National Archives it appears that Jewish property was also expropriated in municipalities in Groningen between 1940 and 1945.
In response, the four municipalities decided to provide clarity about their own actions. The researchers focus on how the municipalities dealt with returning Jews in general and with Jewish property in particular.
The research is led by Richard Paping, Associate Professor at the University of Groningen. The research is expected to be completed by June 2022.
Het Hogeland, Oldambt, Veendam and Westerkwartier are not the first municipalities to investigate the looting of Jewish property. In recent years, several municipalities in the Netherlands have investigated the exploitation of the Jewish minority in this country during and after World War II.
