Israël geeft Zuid-Afrika en Algerije de schuld van het incident, meldt Reuters.

De Israëlische delegatie op de jaarlijkse top van de Afrikaanse Unie in Addis Abeba, Ethiopië, werd zaterdag uitgewezen, meldden Reuters en Walla.

Sharon Bar-li, adjunct-directeur voor Afrika bij het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, stond aan het hoofd van de delegatie, die als waarnemer deelnam.

“Israël neemt het incident waarbij de adjunct-directeur voor Afrika, ambassadeur Sharon Bar-li, werd verwijderd uit de zaal van de Afrikaanse Unie, ondanks haar status als gevolmachtigd waarnemer met toegangsbadges, zeer ernstig,” zei woordvoerder Lior Hair van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, volgens Walla.

“Het is triest om te zien dat de Afrikaanse Unie is gegijzeld door een klein aantal extremistische landen zoals Algerije en Zuid-Afrika, gedreven door haat en gecontroleerd door Iran. Wij roepen de Afrikaanse landen op zich te verzetten tegen deze acties die de organisatie van de Afrikaanse Unie zelf en het hele continent schaden.”

Ebba Kalondo, de woordvoerder van de voorzitter van de commissie van de Afrikaanse Unie, zei dat Bar-li werd verwijderd omdat zij niet de naar behoren gevolmachtigde Israëlische ambassadeur in Ethiopië was, meldde Reuters.

Israël was het daar niet mee eens en zei dat dit gebeurde op verzoek van Zuid-Afrika en Algerije, twee landen die vijandig staan tegenover de Joodse staat.

“Wij roepen de landen van Afrika op om op te staan tegen deze acties die de organisatie van de Afrikaanse Unie zelf en het hele continent schaden,” verklaarde het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken.

“Totdat de Afrikaanse Unie een beslissing neemt over de vraag of Israël de status van waarnemer krijgt, kun je Israel niet als waarnemer laten aanschuiven,” vertelde Clayson Monyela, hoofd openbare diplomatie in Zuid-Afrika’s departement van internationale betrekkingen, aan Reuters.

“Het gaat dus niet om Zuid-Afrika of Algerije, het is een principekwestie,” voegde hij eraan toe.

De Algerijnse delegatie was niet onmiddellijk beschikbaar voor commentaar aan Reuters.

Israel is blaming South Africa and Algeria for the incident, Reuters reports.

The Israeli delegation at the African Union’s annual summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was expelled Saturday, Reuters and Walla reported.

Sharon Bar-li, deputy director for Africa at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, headed the delegation, which was participating as an observer.

“Israel takes the incident in which the Deputy Director for Africa Ambassador Sharon Bar-li was removed from the African Union Hall despite her status as an accredited observer with access badges very seriously,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Hair, according to Walla.

“It is sad to see that the African Union has been taken hostage by a small number of extremist countries such as Algeria and South Africa, driven by hatred and controlled by Iran. We call on African countries to stand against these actions that harm the organization of the African Union itself and the entire continent.”

Ebba Kalondo, the spokesperson for the African Union’s commission chairman, said Bar-li was removed because she was not the duly accredited Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia, Reuters reported.

Israel disagreed, saying it was done at the request of South Africa and Algeria, two countries that are hostile to the Jewish state.

“We call on the countries of Africa to stand up against these actions that harm the organization of the African Union itself and the entire continent,” the Israeli foreign ministry stated.

“Until the AU takes a decision on whether to grant Israel observer status, you cannot have the country sitting and observing,” Clayson Monyela, head of public diplomacy in South Africa’s department of international relations, told Reuters.

“So, it’s not about South Africa or Algeria, it’s an issue of principle,” he added.

The Algerian delegation was not immediately available for comment to Reuters.
