De Israëlische premier Naftali Bennett heeft maandag plannen aangekondigd om het aantal Israëli’s dat op de Golanhoogte woont, massaal te verhogen, met inbegrip van de oprichting van nieuwe steden in het strategische gebied aan de noordelijke grens van Israël.

In zijn toespraak op de Golan Conferentie van Makor Rishon maandagochtend, zei Bennett dat zijn regering een plan heeft om het aantal Israëli’s dat op de Golanhoogte woont te verdubbelen, en vervolgens te verviervoudigen, van ruwweg 26.000 tot 100.000.
Het plan, zei Bennett, zal de oprichting van twee nieuwe steden in de Golan omvatten, evenals de uitbreiding van bestaande gemeenschappen en investeringen in de lokale infrastructuur.
“De ontwikkeling van de Golan is een nationaal belang,” zei Bennett. “Het is niet genoeg om te zeggen ‘De mensen staan achter de Golan’, de regering moet de Golan ook steunen. Zo’n regering hebben we nu. [Minister van Justitie] Gideon Sa’ar is een echte vriend van de Golan, en is een van de grootste voorstanders van het versterken en vestigen in de Golan.”

Over nog eens zes weken houden we een regeringsvergadering in het gebied, waarbij we een nationaal programma voor de Golanhoogte zullen goedkeuren, met als doel om van 26.000 inwoners naar 50.000 te gaan, en vervolgens van 50.000 naar 100.000; om twee nieuwe steden te stichten in de Golanhoogte, om nieuwe banen te creëren en om aanzienlijk te investeren in infrastructuur.”

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Monday announced plans to massively increase the number of Israelis living in the Golan Heights, including the establishment of new towns in the strategic area on Israel’s northern border.

Speaking at Makor Rishon’s Golan Conference Monday morning, Bennett said his government is moving forward with a plan to double, then quadruple the number of Israelis living in the Golan Heights from roughly 26,000 to 100,000.
The plan, Bennett said, will include the establishment of two new towns in the Golan, as well as expansion of existing communities and investment in local infrastructure.
“The development of the Golan is a national interest,” Bennett said. “It is not enough to say ‘The people are with the Golan,’ the government also has to support the Golan. We have that kind of government now. [Justice Minister] Gideon Sa’ar is a true friend of the Golan, and is one of the biggest supporters of strengthening and settling the Golan.”
“Our goal is to double the settlement in the Golan. In another six weeks, we will hold a government meeting in the area, during which we will approve a national program for the Golan Heights, with its goal being to go from 26,000 residents to 50,000, and then from 50,000 to 100,000; to establish two new towns in the Golan Heights, to create new jobs and to significantly invest in infrastructure.”
