Minister van Openbare Veiligheid Itamar Ben-Gvir vraagt om een grootschalige operatie om “terreurnesten uit te roeien”, maar het is onduidelijk of het Veiligheidskabinet dit zal goedkeuren.

Minister van Openbare Veiligheid Itamar Ben-Gvir pleit voor een grootschalige veiligheidsoperatie in Oost-Jeruzalem om terrorisme uit te roeien, nadat twee terroristische aanslagen in Jeruzalem in twee weken tijd 10 Israëli’s hebben gedood.
Ben-Gvir vertelde vrijdag op de plaats van een dodelijke auto-aanslag in Jeruzalem dat de Hebreeuwse media zich moeten voorbereiden op “Defensive Shield 2”.
Operatie Defensive Shield was een langdurige Israëlische militaire operatie die ongeveer zes weken duurde en voornamelijk gericht was tegen terreurgroepen in Jenin.
De operatie werd uitgevoerd in 2002 op het hoogtepunt van de Tweede Intifada, en begon twee dagen nadat een Palestijnse zelfmoordterrorist 30 burgers had gedood in een hotel in Netanya op de eerste avond van de Pesach-vakantie.
Op vrijdag zei Ben-Gvir dat hij de veiligheidstroepen had opgedragen zich voor te bereiden op een grootschalige operatie “om de terreurnesten uit te roeien… en de terroristen thuis te treffen.”
Een hoge regeringsfunctionaris wees de opmerkingen van Ben-Gvir af in een verklaring aan Hebreeuwse media en zei dat “beslissingen van een dergelijke omvang niet worden genomen in verklaringen van een of andere minister op een stoep bij de plaats van een aanslag.”
De ambtenaar voegde eraan toe dat “als er een dergelijk besluit is, het zal komen na overleg met alle partijen en na een kabinetsdebat.”
Maar ondanks de kritiek verdubbelde Ben-Gvir in verklaringen aan collega’s zijn belofte om Defensive Shield 2 uit te voeren.
“Ik heb zeker de autoriteit” om een dergelijke operatie uit te voeren, zei Ben-Gvir tegen vertrouwelingen, volgens berichten in de hebreeuwstalige media.
“De bedoeling van Operation Protective Shield 2 is niet om tanks de straat op te sturen…maar om de wet te gaan handhaven.”
Israëls veiligheidskabinet kwam zondag bijeen om een antwoord te bespreken op de meest recente golf van terreur in de hoofdstad van de Joodse Staat.
“Het gepaste antwoord op terrorisme is om het hard aan te pakken – en onze wortels in ons land nog meer te verdiepen,” zei Netanyahu aan het begin van de vergadering.
Het is onduidelijk of het Veiligheidskabinet een operatie van deze omvang zal goedkeuren.

Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir requests massive operation aimed at ‘rooting out terror nests,’ but it’s unclear if the Security Cabinet will approve.

Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is advocating for a massive security operation in eastern Jerusalem aimed at rooting out terrorism, after two terrorist attacks in Jerusalem in a two-week span killed 10 Israelis.
Speaking at the scene of a deadly car-ramming attack in Jerusalem on Friday, Ben-Gvir told Hebrew language media to prepare for “Defensive Shield 2.”
Operation Defensive Shield was a prolonged Israeli military operation lasting some six weeks and primarily focused on terror groups in Jenin.
The operation was carried out in 2002 at the height of the Second Intifada, beginning two days after a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 30 civilians at a hotel in Netanya on the first night of the Passover holiday.
On Friday, Ben-Gvir said that he had ordered security forces to prepare for a wide scale operation “to root our terror nests… and reach the terrorists at their homes.”
A senior government official dismissed Ben-Gvir’s remarks in a statement to Hebrew language media, saying that “decisions of such a scale are not made in statements by one minister or another on a sidewalk at the scene of an attack.”
The official added that “if there is such a decision, it will come after consultation with all the parties and after a cabinet discussion.”
But despite the criticism, Ben-Gvir doubled down on his pledge to implement Defensive Shield 2 in statements to colleagues.
“I certainly have the authority” to implement an operation of this kind, Ben-Gvir told confidants, according to Hebrew language media reports.
“The intention of Operation Protective Shield 2 is not to send tanks into the streets…but to start enforcing the law.”
Israel’s Security Cabinet met on Sunday to discuss a response to the most recent wave of terror in the Jewish State’s capital city.
“The appropriate answer to terrorism is to strike it hard – and deepen our roots in our country even more,” Netanyahu reportedly said at the beginning of the meeting.
It’s unclear if the Security Cabinet will approve an operation of the scale that Ben-Gvir is requesting.
