De muurschildering vertelt het verhaal van het Joodse volk, beginnend met de schepping van Adam tot de vorming van de natie Israël, haar ballingschap, de opkomst van het zionisme en de oprichting van de moderne staat.
Het verhaalt verder over de staat Israël in zijn 75-jarig bestaan, zijn ontwikkeling, oorlogen, innovaties, landschappen, leiders, wetenschappers en denkers.
Het schilderij is gemaakt in een grafische kunststijl geïnspireerd door Zuid-Amerikaanse en Mexicaanse kunst. Internationale Mexicaanse kunstenaar Julio Carrasco Bretón creëerde de muurschildering.
De muurschildering is een initiatief van het Israel-Latin America Network (ILAN), dat tot doel heeft de betrekkingen tussen Latijns-Amerika en Israël te versterken, met name op het gebied van innovatie. Het project begon ongeveer een jaar geleden met de zegen van de Israëlische president Isaac Herzog ter gelegenheid van de 75e verjaardag van de staat.
Bij de onthulling waren Bretón, minister van Transport Miri Regev, voorzitter van de Wereld Zionistische Organisatie Yaakov Hagoel, president en oprichter van ILAN Isaac Asa en een delegatie van ongeveer 50 ILAN-vertegenwoordigers, waaronder hoofden van Joodse gemeenschappen uit Midden- en Zuid-Amerika, leden van het Congres en andere hoogwaardigheidsbekleders aanwezig.
“We hadden het voorrecht om samen met de leden van de ILAN-organisatie en de leiders van de ILAN-gemeenschappen in Latijns-Amerika het meest uitgebreide en gedetailleerde artistieke muurschilderingproject in de geschiedenis van het Joodse volk en in de hele wereld te voltooien,” zei Asa.
“In feite is dit de enige plek ter wereld waar het erfgoed en de geschiedenis van een volk geconcentreerd zijn op één plek en op een toegankelijke en artistieke manier die iedereen kan begrijpen, kan ontroeren en men zich in kan leven”, voegde hij eraan toe.
“Het volk van Israël heeft door de generaties heen een lange weg afgelegd. Het Joodse volk heeft morele waarden, sociale solidariteit en innovatie bijgedragen aan de hele mensheid. We hebben een complexe logistieke operatie uitgevoerd om deze muurschildering naar Israël te brengen. Wie Israël binnenkomt, zal met eigen ogen het verhaal van de geschiedenis, de toekomst en de belangrijke bijdrage van het Joodse volk en de staat Israël aan de familie van naties kunnen zien”, zei Asa.
De muurschildering, die momenteel de toegangsmuur naar Israël in Terminal 3 van de luchthaven bedekt, is nog maar aan het begin van zijn reis. Het zal op andere historische locaties in Israël en op plekken die belangrijk zijn, worden tentoongesteld, evenals in Joodse gemeenschappen in Europa, Zuid-Amerika en de VS.
Het stuk werd een paar maanden geleden gelanceerd in Mexico tijdens een ceremonie die werd bijgewoond door de toenmalige minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Marcelo Ebrard, de hoofden van Joodse gemeenschappen in Zuid-Amerika, ministers en andere hoogwaardigheidsbekleders.

A huge mural, 50 meters [164 ft.] long and five meters [16 ft.] high and titled Am Yisrael Chai [The People of Israel Live], celebrating 4,000 years of Jewish history, was unveiled at Ben Gurion International Airport on Tuesday.

The mural tells the story of the Jewish people, starting with the creation of Adam to the formation of the nation of Israel, its exile, the rise of Zionism and the establishment of the modern state.
It continues through the story of the State of Israel in its 75 years of existence, its development, wars, innovations, landscapes, leaders, scientists and thinkers.
The painting was done in a graphic art style inspired by South American and Mexican art. International Mexican artist Julio Carrasco Bretón created the mural.
The mural is an initiative of the Israel–Latin America Network (ILAN), which aims to strengthen relations between Latin America and Israel, particularly in the area of innovation. The project began about a year ago with the blessing of Israeli President Isaac Herzog on the occasion of the state’s 75th birthday.
On hand at the unveiling were Bretón, Transportation Minister Miri Regev, World Zionist Organization Chairman Yaakov Hagoel, President and founder of ILAN Isaac Asa and a delegation of about 50 ILAN representatives, including heads of Jewish communities from Central and South America, members of Congress and other dignitaries.
“We were privileged, together with the members of the ILAN organization and the leaders of the ILAN communities in Latin America, to complete the most comprehensive and detailed artistic mural painting project in the history of the Jewish people and in the entire world,” Asa said.
“In fact, this is the only place in the world where the heritage and history of a people are concentrated in one place and in an accessible and artistic way that everyone can understand, be moved by and empathize with,” he added.
“The people of Israel have come a long way through the generations, the Jewish people have contributed values of morality and social solidarity and innovation to all humanity. We carried out a complex logistical operation to bring this mural to Israel. Whoever enters Israel will be able to see with their own eyes the story of history, the future and the significant contribution of the Jewish people and the State of Israel to the family of nations,” Asa said.
The mural, which currently covers the entrance wall to Israel at the airport’s Terminal 3, is only beginning its journey. It will be displayed at other locations throughout Israel of historical and state value, as well as in Jewish communities in Europe, South America, and the US.
The piece was launched a few months ago in Mexico in a ceremony attended by the country’s then-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, the heads of Jewish communities in South America, ministers and other dignitaries.
