Israëlische autoriteiten zeggen dat een Iraans-Joodse man heeft bekend dat hij van plan was om in opdracht van Iran informatie te verzamelen in Israël.

Een vermoedelijke Iraanse spion werd vrijdag bij zijn aankomst in het land gearresteerd door de Israëlische autoriteiten op Ben Gurion International Airport.
De verdachte, een Iraans-Joodse man met familieleden die in Israël wonen, werd vrijdagochtend vroeg in hechtenis genomen door het binnenlandse veiligheidsagentschap Shin Bet en vrijdagochtend vroeg ondervraagd voordat hij weer werd vrijgelaten. De toegang tot Israël werd hem ontzegd en vervolgens gedwongen terug te keren naar Iran.
Volgens de Shin Bet bekende de vermoedelijke spion tijdens zijn ondervraging dat hij van plan was om verkenningen uit te voeren namens de Iraanse regering.
De spion in spé vertelde zijn ondervragers dat hij voor zijn vertrek uit Iran een ontmoeting had gehad met Iraanse veiligheidsfunctionarissen en apparatuur had gekregen voor het verzamelen van inlichtingen, waaronder camera’s, mobiele telefoons, mobiele opladers en geld.
De verdachte zei dat hij na zijn missie opdracht had gekregen om zijn uitrusting in een tissuebox te deponeren.
De Iraanse contactpersonen van de man waren van plan om hem adressen in Israël te geven die hij in de gaten kon houden.
“Deze gebeurtenis maakt deel uit van een brede Iraanse poging om spionage- en terreurgroepen in Israël op te zetten, naast de invloed in het reform netwerk de sociale kloof te vergroten”, zei de Shin Bet.
“De Shin Bet, samen met zijn partners in het veiligheidssysteem, werkt de hele tijd en zal vastberaden blijven werken om de pogingen van Iran om op te treden tegen de staat Israël op te sporen en te verijdelen, zowel op het gebied van terroristische activiteiten als op het gebied van spionage en cyber.”
Tweeënhalve week geleden beweerde Teheran dat het een massale Mossad-spionagekring had opgerold, naar verluidt de grootste die ooit in Iran is gevonden.
De arrestaties vonden vorige week in heel Iran plaats, meldde de aan de staat gelieerde IRNA-media, maar vermeldde niet hoeveel arrestaties er waren verricht.
De autoriteiten namen ook 43 krachtige op afstand bestuurbare bommen en andere wapens in beslag.

Israeli authorities say Iranian Jewish man confessed to planning to gather information in Israel on Iran’s behalf.

A suspected Iranian spy was arrested by Israeli authorities at Ben Gurion International Airport Friday, upon his arrival in the country.
The suspect, an Iranian Jewish man with relatives living in Israel, was taken into custody by the Shin Bet internal security agency and questioned early Friday morning before being released, denied entry to Israel, and forced to return to Iran.
According to the Shin Bet, during his interrogation, the suspected spy confessed that he had planned to conduct reconnaissance on behalf of the Iranian government.
The would-be spy told his interrogators that prior to his departure from Iran, he had met with Iranian security officials and had been issued equipment for intelligence gathering, including cameras, cellular phones, mobile charges, and money.
Following his mission, the suspect said, he was under orders to dispose of his equipment in a tissue box.
The man’s Iranian handlers were planning to provide him with addresses in Israel for him to monitor.
“This event is part of a broad Iranian effort to establish espionage and terror axes in Israel, alongside the influence in the network to widen the social divide,” the Shin Bet said.
“The Shin Bet, together with its partners in the security system, works all the time and will continue to work resolutely to detect and thwart Iran’s attempts to act against the State of Israel both in the face of terrorist activity and espionage and cyber.”
Two-and-a-half weeks ago, Tehran claimed it had broken up a massive Mossad spy ring, reportedly the largest ever found in Iran.
The arrests took place last week all over Iran, the country’s state-affiliated IRNA media reported, but did not mention how many arrests were made.
Authorities also seized 43 powerful remote-controlled bombs among other weapons.
