Israël vraagt de Algemene Vergadering van de VN om unaniem een resolutie aan te nemen die het ontkennen van de Holocaust veroordeelt en alle landen en sociale media platforms oproept om antisemitisme te bestrijden.

De Algemene Vergadering zal de stemming houden op 20 januari, die een speciale betekenis heeft. Het is de 80e verjaardag van de Wannseeconferentie in Berlijn, waar nazileiders bijeenkwamen om plannen te bespreken voor Hitlers “Endlösung der Judenfrage”. Het resultaat was de moord op zes miljoen Joden in nazi-doodkampen.
De resolutie zal de werkdefinitie van de International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) van holocaustontkenning gebruiken en er bij landen en sociale mediagiganten op aandringen “actieve maatregelen te nemen om antisemitisme en ontkenning of verdraaiing van de holocaust te bestrijden”.
“We hopen dat het in een consensus zal worden aangenomen,” vertelde Israëls V.N.-ambassadeur Gilad Erdan woensdag aan verschillende verslaggevers. “Als we willen dat dit orgaan, de V.N., erin slaagt genocide te voorkomen, moeten we ons herinneren wat er in het verleden is gebeurd en dit is het doel van het besluit van morgen.”
De Verenigde Staten en Duitsland steunen de resolutie en scharen zich achter Israël, aldus het kantoor van Erdan.
De ambassadeur zei eerder deze maand dat “het gevaarlijke fenomeen van de ontkenning van de Holocaust” alleen maar is toegenomen te midden van een stijging van het antisemitisme tijdens de COVID-19 pandemie en de Israëlische oorlog met Gaza afgelopen mei.
Iran aanhalend, zei Erdan dat hele landen – niet alleen individuen – hebben ontkend dat de Holocaust ooit heeft plaatsgevonden, meldde Jewish Insider.
Erdan hoopt dat zijn resolutie een nieuwe “internationale standaard” zal zetten voor wat holocaustontkenning betekent en hoe het te bestrijden.
“Ik hoop dat zelfs landen waarmee we geen betrekkingen onderhouden het belang van deze resolutie zullen inzien… en zullen besluiten om voor te stemmen,” zei hij.

Israel is asking the UN General Assembly to unanimously adopt a resolution that condemns Holocaust denial and urges all countries and social media platforms to fight anti-Semitism.

The General Assembly is scheduled to hold the vote on Jan. 20, which has special significance. It is the 80th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin, when Nazi leaders met to discuss plans for Hitler’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” The result was the murder of six million Jews in Nazi death camps.
The resolution will use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of Holocaust denial and urge countries and social media giants “to take active measures to combat antisemitism and Holocaust denial or distortion.”
“We hope it is going to be adopted in a consensus,” Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan told several reporters on Wednesday. “If we want this body, the U.N., to succeed in preventing genocide we must remember what happened in the past and this is the goal of tomorrow’s decision.”
The United States and Germany support the resolution and are backing Israel, according to Erdan’s office.
The ambassador said earlier this month that “the dangerous phenomenon of Holocaust denial” has only increased amid a rise in anti-Semitism during the COVID-19 pandemic and Israel’s war with Gaza last May.
Citing Iran, Erdan said entire countries – not just individuals – have denied the Holocaust ever happened, Jewish Insider reported.
Erdan hopes his resolution will set a new “international standard” for what Holocaust denial means and how to fight it.
“I hope that even countries with whom we don’t have relations will understand the importance of this resolution… and decide to vote in favor,” he said.
