Een nieuwe inlichtingeneenheid van de IDF, Branch 54, die momenteel uit slechts 30 soldaten bestaat, bereidt zich voor op een mogelijke oorlog met Iran, in het bijzonder met de Islamitische Revolutionaire Garde (IRGC).

In de afgelopen jaren is Iran zich meer gaan verzetten tegen Israël en heeft minstens 10 drones gelanceerd in de richting van de Joodse staat, de meest recente in april boven de Hula Vallei in het noorden van Israël. De Quds Force van de IRGC heeft ook geprobeerd om troepen van de Israël Defense Forces aan te vallen en terroristen naar het buitenland gestuurd om Israëlische toeristen als doelwit te nemen, vooral in Turkije.
Officieren, die anoniem willen blijven, legden uit dat het doel van de eenheid een belangrijke koerswijziging is.
“Dit is een belangrijke koerswijziging die de IDF moet maken. Het is niet vergelijkbaar met een oorlog tegen Hezbollah of een operatie in Gaza tegen Hamas of Islamitische Jihad,” legde Lt.-Col. T, het hoofd van de onderzoeksafdeling van Branch 54, uit, “Het is alsof je een senior commandant in de IDF, die de hele dag traint voor een oorlog in Libanon of Gaza, op de hoogte brengt dat het deze keer heel anders is dan wat hij tot nu toe heeft gekend.”
Kolonel T legde ook uit dat de nieuwe eenheid verantwoordelijk zal zijn voor de strategie van een oorlog tegen Iran.
“Wij zijn verantwoordelijk voor het leveren van de kennisinfrastructuur aan het leger met betrekking tot de Iraanse militaire capaciteiten en strategische systemen die onder hun controle staan. We houden ons bezig met onderzoek naar de aansturingselementen in Iran van het hoogste niveau tot aan de operators aan de frontlinies.”
De nieuwe eenheid van Branch 54 zal “het eerste centrale punt zijn in de voorbereidingen van de IDF op een scenario van een brede en openlijke militaire confrontatie met het Iraanse leger. In het algemeen richt de tak zich op het verzamelen van inlichtingen, vergelijkbaar met de voorbereidingen voor actuele inlichtingengebaseerde training voor gevechten met Hezbollah en Hamas. Een van de afdelingen binnen de tak wordt beschouwd als operatief, het verzamelen van inlichtingen over het reguliere leger van de IRGC,” aldus Ynet News.
De eenheid heeft ook een doelwit-afdeling om potentiële doelwitten binnen Iran te analyseren, mocht Israël moeten toeslaan.
“We analyseren de IRGC specifiek binnen Iran, niet de Quds Force,” legde Lt.-Col. Y, die de doelafdeling leidt, uit.
“Iran is een heel groot land in termen van grondgebied en ze weten dat er gevolgen zullen zijn voor onze operaties binnen hun grondgebied – maar het is een wederzijds spel van exposure,” voegde de kolonel eraan toe.

A new IDF intelligence unit, Branch 54, which currently consists of only 30 soldiers, is preparing for potential war with Iran, specifically with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

In recent years, Iran has become emboldened against Israel, launching at least 10 drones toward the Jewish state, most recently in April over the Hula Valley in northern Israel. The IRGC’s Quds Force has also sought to attack Israel Defense Forces troops and sent terrorists abroad to target Israeli tourists, especially in Turkey.
Officers, speaking with anonymity, explained that the purpose of the unit represents a significant change in mindset.
“This is a significant mindset change that the IDF is required to make. It is not similar to a war against Hezbollah or an operation in Gaza against Hamas or Islamic Jihad,” explained Lt.-Col. T, the head of Branch 54’s research department, “It is like briefing a senior commander in the IDF who trains all day for war in Lebanon or Gaza and telling him that this time it is entirely different from what he has known until now.”
Colonel T also explained that the new unit will be responsible for strategizing a war against Iran.
“We are responsible for providing the military with the knowledge infrastructure regarding Iranian military capabilities and strategic systems under their control. We are engaged in researching the elements of control in Iran from the senior level down to the operators at the frontlines.”
The new Branch 54 unit will be “the first focal point in the IDF’s preparations for a scenario of wide and overt military confrontation with the Iranian military. In general, the branch focuses on intelligence learning, similar to the preparations for up-to-date intelligence-based training for combat with Hezbollah and Hamas. One of the departments within the branch is considered operative, collecting intelligence on the regular army of the IRGC,” according to Ynet News.
The unit also has a target department to analyze potential targets inside Iran should Israel need to strike.
“We analyze the IRGC specifically within Iran, not the Quds Force,” Lt.-Col. Y, who leads the target department, explained.
“Iran is a very large country in terms of territory, and they know there will be consequences to our operations within their territory – but it’s a mutual game of exposure,” the colonel added.
