Palestijnen hebben opnieuw laten zien dat hun echte helden, helaas, degenen zijn die terroristische aanvallen uitvoeren op Joden en streven naar de eliminatie van Israël.

In mei werden er verkiezingen gehouden voor studentenraden op de twee belangrijkste Palestijnse universiteiten op de Westelijke Jordaanoever: An-Najah Universiteit in Nablus en Birzeit Universiteit, ten noorden van Ramallah, de feitelijke hoofdstad van de Palestijnen. De twee belangrijkste studentenlijsten die meededen aan de verkiezingen zijn aangesloten bij Hamas, de terroristische organisatie die de Gazastrook controleert, en Fatah, de regerende factie onder leiding van president Mahmoud Abbas van de Palestijnse Autoriteit (PA).

De resultaten van de verkiezingen aan de twee universiteiten verrasten niet degenen die bekend zijn met de algemene gevoelens onder de Palestijnen: de lijsten die gelieerd zijn aan Hamas wonnen de meeste zetels in de studentenraden. Voor de 87-jarige Abbas en zijn Fatah-factie was de overwinning van de Hamas-aanhangers niet alleen vernederend, maar ook een herinnering aan het feit dat als het aankomt op de omgang met Israël, veel Palestijnen het terrorisme verkiezen boven diplomatie.

De verkiezingscampagnes en debatten op de universiteiten gingen vooral over de relatie tussen de Palestijnen en Israël.

De studenten die aangesloten zijn bij Hamas, wiens handvest openlijk oproept tot de eliminatie van Israël, pochten dat hun groep terroristische aanvallen blijft uitvoeren waarbij Joden worden gedood of gewond. Deze studenten maakten hun rivalen in Fatah belachelijk omdat ze te soft zouden zijn voor Israël en niet genoeg terreuraanslagen tegen Joden zouden plegen.

De aan Hamas gelieerde studenten veroordeelden ook de door Fatah gedomineerde Palestijnse Autoriteit voor het uitvoeren van veiligheidscoördinatie met Israëlische veiligheidstroepen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Elke vorm van samenwerking met Israël komt volgens hen neer op verraad.

De onderliggende boodschap van de aan Hamas gelieerde lijsten aan de duizenden studenten op de twee campussen was: Stem op ons omdat we expliciet en zonder voorbehoud de gewapende strijd tegen Israël steunen en beloven de Jihad (heilige oorlog) voort te zetten om Joden te vermoorden en Israël te vervangen door een genocidale islamitische staat, vrij van niet-moslims.

Tijdens verkiezingsbijeenkomsten op de twee universiteitscampussen gebruikten aanhangers van Hamas spandoeken en foto’s waarop Palestijnse terroristen werden verheerlijkt, zoals de hooggeplaatste Hamasleden Mohammed Def en Mosab Shtayyeh, die door Israël worden gezocht voor hun rol in een reeks terroristische aanslagen, waaronder schietpartijen en zelfmoordaanslagen.

Toen het aan Hamas gelieerde Islamitisch Blok op 24 mei te horen kreeg dat het de verkiezingen aan de Birzeit Universiteit had gewonnen, kondigde het aan dat Mosab Shtayyeh, die momenteel om onbekende redenen in hechtenis wordt gehouden door de Palestijnse Autoriteit, zal fungeren als “erevoorzitter” van de studentenraad.

Nu de twee belangrijkste Palestijnse universiteitsstudentenraden worden gecontroleerd door Hamas, is het de vraag of het wel een goed idee zou zijn om de lang verwachte presidents- en parlementsverkiezingen te houden voor de PA op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en in de Gazastrook. Het antwoord is helaas “nee” — en zeker niet onder de huidige omstandigheden, waar een meerderheid van de Palestijnen zegt dat ze op Hamasleider Ismail Haniyeh zouden stemmen als en wanneer er nieuwe PA presidentsverkiezingen zouden worden gehouden. Het zou ook geen goed idee zijn om algemene verkiezingen te houden op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en in de Gazastrook op een moment dat een meerderheid van de Palestijnen steun betuigt voor een “gewapende intifada” (opstand) tegen Israël.

Meer dan 70% van de Palestijnen, volgens een opiniepeiling van het Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey, steunt de terroristische aanslag waarbij twee broers, Hallel Yaniv, 21, en Yagel Yaniv, 19, koelbloedig werden vermoord in maart toen ze door de Palestijnse stad Huwara reden op weg naar huis. Uit de peiling bleek ook dat 68% van de Palestijnen de vorming van terreurgroepen, zoals de Lions’ Den, steunt om Joden aan te vallen en te vermoorden.

Hamas heeft gelijk als het zegt dat de resultaten van de verkiezingen op de twee universiteiten het bewijs zijn dat de meeste Palestijnen terrorisme tegen Israël steunen. Hamas zei in een verklaring:

“Deze [Hamas] overwinning stuurt een duidelijke boodschap over de stijgende populariteit van het verzet [tegen Israël]…. De overwinning bevestigt opnieuw de gehechtheid van ons volk aan de optie van verzet.”

Voor alle duidelijkheid, wanneer Hamas het heeft over het “verzet”, verwijst het naar verschillende vormen van terrorisme, waaronder zelfmoordaanslagen, schietpartijen, steekpartijen, ramkraken op auto’s en het afvuren van raketten op Israël vanuit de Gazastrook.

Zakaria Abu Muammar, een hooggeplaatste Hamas-functionaris, zei dat de overwinning van de aanhangers van zijn groep op de universiteiten “het vertrouwen van de Palestijnse jongeren in Hamas en haar plannen weerspiegelt.”

Voor het geval het niet duidelijk was wat de plannen van Hamas zijn, is het de moeite waard om het in 1988 gepubliceerde convenant van de groep te lezen.

Artikel 11 van het convenant benadrukt bijvoorbeeld de strategieën en methoden van Hamas:

“De Islamitische Verzetsbeweging [Hamas] gelooft dat het land Palestina een islamitische Waqf is, gewijd voor toekomstige moslimgeneraties tot aan de Dag des Oordeels. Het land, of een deel ervan, mag niet worden verspild; het land, of een deel ervan, mag niet worden opgegeven. Noch één enkel Arabisch land, noch alle Arabische landen, noch enige koning of president… noch enige organisatie, noch alle organisaties, of ze nu Palestijns of Arabisch zijn, bezitten het recht om dat te doen.”

Artikel 13 van het Hamas-convenant spoort moslims aan om Jihad te voeren tegen Israël en alle vredesinitiatieven af te wijzen:

“Er is geen oplossing voor de Palestijnse kwestie verwacht door middel van Jihad. Initiatieven, voorstellen en internationale conferenties zijn allemaal tijdverspilling en vergeefse moeite.”

De overwinning van de aan Hamas gelieerde lijsten op de twee Palestijnse universiteiten op de Westelijke Jordaanoever zou niet alleen moeten dienen als een waarschuwing voor Mahmoud Abbas, maar ook voor de internationale gemeenschap, in het bijzonder voor de regering Biden, wiens vertegenwoordigers het misleidende en gevaarlijke idee van een “tweestatenoplossing” tussen de Palestijnen en Israël blijven promoten. Het is een gevaarlijk idee omdat het zal leiden tot de oprichting van een door Hamas gecontroleerde staat naast Israël. Net als de Gazastrook zou ook deze staat door Iran en zijn terreur-proxies gebruikt worden als lanceerbasis om Israël aan te vallen.

Het is tijd voor de regering Biden, de Europese Unie en de Verenigde Naties om wakker te worden en met hun eigen ogen te zien dat de enige oplossing die door een meerderheid van de Palestijnen wordt nagestreefd er een is die doelbewust zou leiden tot de eliminatie van Israël. De universiteitsstudenten die voor Hamas hebben gestemd, hebben Hamas’ oproep tot Jihad en terrorisme tegen Israël goedgekeurd. Ze hebben Hamas’ argument onderschreven dat Israël geen bestaansrecht heeft.

Ze hebben ook het argument onderschreven dat geen enkele Palestijnse of Arabische leider het recht heeft om toegevingen te doen aan Israël.

De overwinning van Hamas-aanhangers in de universitaire verkiezingen herinnert ons er nog maar eens aan hoe Palestijnen zijn opgevoed om Israël te haten en diegenen te verheerlijken die Joden vermoorden. Generaties lang hebben Palestijnse leiders de harten en geesten van hun volk vergiftigd tegen Israël en de Joden. De hoge achting van Palestijnse universiteitsstudenten voor een islamistische groepering als Hamas is een natuurlijk gevolg van deze generatieoverschrijdende haatfestijnen.

De functionarissen in de regering Biden, de Europese Unie en de Verenigde Naties die blijven praten over de noodzaak van een “tweestatenoplossing” pleiten in feite voor de oprichting van nog een staat onder leiding van Hamas, net als ISIS, dit keer op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en in Oost-Jeruzalem. Een soortgelijke staat bestaat al in de door Hamas geregeerde Gazastrook, die wordt gebruikt als lanceerbasis om raketten op Israël af te vuren.

De resultaten van de recente universitaire verkiezingen zijn een duidelijke indicatie — en waarschuwing — dat als de hele Westelijke Jordaanoever en Oost-Jeruzalem ooit zouden worden overgedragen aan de exclusieve controle van de Palestijnse Autoriteit, ook zij in handen zouden komen van Hamas, hetzij door verkiezingen of door een gewelddadige en bloedige staatsgreep zoals die plaatsvond in de Gazastrook in 2007. Hamas pleegde een staatsgreep, wierp de Palestijnse Autoriteit omver en greep de controle over de hele Gazastrook. Nog maar een jaar eerder had Hamas de parlementsverkiezingen van de PA gewonnen.

Door opnieuw voor Hamas te stemmen, sturen de Palestijnen een boodschap naar de wereld dat ze vastbesloten zijn om terrorisme en geweld tegen Israël voort te zetten.

Ze sturen ook een waarschuwing naar Abbas en andere Palestijnse leiders om geen vrede te sluiten met Israël of er op welke manier dan ook mee samen te werken, anders zullen ze worden behandeld als verraders — nog een bewijs, alsof dat nog nodig was, dat de Palestijnen opnieuw hebben gekozen voor geweld, terrorisme en ellende in plaats van een mooie, veelbelovende toekomst, een betere economie en welvaart voor hun jongeren.

Palestinians have once again shown that their real heroes, sadly, are those who carry out terrorist attacks against Jews and seek the elimination of Israel.

In May, elections for student councils were held at the two most important Palestinian universities in the West Bank: An-Najah University in Nablus and Birzeit University, north of Ramallah, the de facto capital of the Palestinians. The two major student lists that ran in the elections are affiliated with Hamas, the terrorist organization controlling the Gaza Strip, and Fatah, the ruling faction headed by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas.

The results of the elections at the two universities did not surprise those familiar with the general sentiments among the Palestinians: the Hamas-affiliated lists won most of the seats on the student councils. For the 87-year-old Abbas and his Fatah faction, the victory of the Hamas supporters was not only humiliating, but also a reminder that when it comes to dealing with Israel, many Palestinians prefer terrorism over diplomacy.

The election campaigns and debates at the universities focused mostly on the relationship between the Palestinians and Israel.

The students affiliated with Hamas, whose charter openly calls for the elimination of Israel, boasted that their group continues to carry out terrorist attacks in which Jews have been killed or wounded. These students ridiculed their rivals in Fatah for allegedly being too soft on Israel and not carrying out enough terrorist attacks against Jews.

The Hamas-affiliated students also condemned the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority for conducting security coordination with Israeli security forces in the West Bank. Any form of cooperation with Israel, they argued, is tantamount to treason.

The underlying message the Hamas-affiliated lists sent to the thousands of students at the two campuses was: Vote for us because we explicitly and unreservedly uphold the armed struggle against Israel and promise to continue the Jihad (holy war) to murder Jews and replace Israel with a genocidal Islamist state, free of non-Muslims.

During election rallies at the two university campuses, Hamas supporters used banners and photos glorifying Palestinian terrorists such as senior Hamas members Mohammed Def and Mosab Shtayyeh, who are wanted by Israel for their roles in a series of terrorist attacks, including shootings and suicide bombings.

When the Hamas-affiliated Islamic Bloc learned that it had won the elections at Birzeit University on May 24, it announced that Mosab Shtayyeh, currently being held in Palestinian Authority custody for unknown reasons, will serve as “honorary president” of the student council.

Now that the two most important Palestinian university student councils are controlled by Hamas, the question is whether it would be a good idea to hold long overdue presidential and parliamentary elections for the PA in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The answer, unfortunately, is “no” — and certainly not under the current circumstances, where a majority of Palestinians are saying that they would vote for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh if and when new PA presidential elections were held. It also would not be a particularly good idea to hold general elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip at a time when a majority of Palestinians are voicing support for an “armed intifada” (uprising) against Israel.

More than 70% of the Palestinians, according to a public opinion poll conducted the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey, support the terrorist attack in which two brothers, Hallel Yaniv, 21, and Yagel Yaniv, 19, were cold-bloodedly murdered in March as they drove through the Palestinian town of Huwara on their way home. The poll also found that 68% of the Palestinians support the formation of terror groups, such as the Lions’ Den, to attack and murder Jews.

Hamas is correct when it says that the results of the elections at the two universities are proof that most Palestinians support terrorism against Israel. Hamas said in a statement:

“This [Hamas] victory sends a clear message about the rising popularity of the resistance [against Israel]… The victory reaffirms our people’s adherence to the option of resistance.”

To be clear, when Hamas talks about the “resistance,” it is referring to various forms of terrorism, including suicide bombings, shootings, stabbings, car-rammings and firing rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Zakaria Abu Muammar, a senior Hamas official, said the victory of his group’s supporters at the universities “reflects the Palestinian youths’ confidence in Hamas and its plans.”

In case it was not clear what Hamas’s plans are, it is worth reading the group’s covenant, published in 1988 and which remains unchanged and as relevant as ever.

Article 11 of the covenant, for instance, underlines the strategies and methods of Hamas:

“The Islamic Resistance Movement [Hamas] believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered; it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president…neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that.”

Article 13 of the Hamas covenant urges Muslims to wage Jihad on Israel and reject any peace initiatives:

“There is no solution for the Palestinian issue expect through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.”

The victory of the Hamas-affiliated lists at the two Palestinian universities in the West Bank should serve as a warning not only to Mahmoud Abbas, but also to the international community, especially the Biden administration, whose representatives continue to promote the delusional and dangerous idea of a “two-state solution” between the Palestinians and Israel. It is a dangerous idea because it will lead to the establishment of a Hamas-controlled state next to Israel. Like the Gaza Strip, this state too would be used by Iran and its terror proxies as a launching pad to attack Israel.

It is time for the Biden administration, the European Union and the United Nations to wake up and see with their own eyes that the only solution sought by a majority of Palestinians is one that would deliberately lead to the elimination of Israel. The university students who voted for Hamas have endorsed Hamas’s call for Jihad and terrorism against Israel. They have endorsed Hamas’s argument that Israel has no right to exist.

They have also endorsed the argument that no Palestinian or Arab leader is entitled to make any concessions to Israel.

The victory of Hamas supporters in the university elections is yet another reminder how Palestinians have been raised to hate Israel and glorify those who murder Jews. For generations, Palestinian leaders have been poisoning the hearts and minds of their people against Israel and Jews. The high regard of Palestinian university students for an Islamist group such as Hamas is a natural consequence of this inter-generational hate-fest.

The officials in the Biden administration, European Union and United Nations who continue to talk about the need for a “two-state solution” are actually advocating the creation of another Hamas-led state, like ISIS, this time in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. A similar state already exists in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, used a launching pad to fire rockets into Israel.

The results of the recent university elections are a clear indication — and warning — that if all of the West Bank and east Jerusalem were ever handed over to the exclusive control of the Palestinian Authority, they too would end up in the hands of Hamas, whether through elections or a violent and bloody coup like the one that took place in the Gaza Strip in 2007. Hamas staged a coup, overthrew the Palestinian Authority and seized control of the entire Gaza Strip. Just a year earlier, Hamas had won the PA parliamentary elections.

By voting for Hamas once again, Palestinians are sending a message to the world that they are determined to pursue terrorism and violence against Israel.

They are also sending a warning to Abbas and other Palestinian leaders not to make peace with Israel or work with it in any way, or else they will be treated as traitors — further proof, as if it were needed, that the Palestinians have yet again chosen violence, terrorism and misery rather than a bright, promising future, a better economy, and prosperity for their young.
