Een woordvoerster van Downing Street zei dat Truss Lapid heeft geïnformeerd “over haar herziening van de huidige locatie van de Britse ambassade in Israël.”

De Britse premier Liz Truss heeft haar Israëlische ambtgenoot Yair Lapid verteld dat zij overweegt de Britse ambassade in Tel Aviv te verplaatsen naar Jeruzalem.

Truss bracht het onderwerp ter sprake tijdens een ontmoeting met Lapid tijdens de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties in New York, aldus Britse media.

Een woordvoerster van Downing Street zei dat Truss Lapid informeerde “over haar herziening van de huidige locatie van de Britse ambassade in Israël,” meldden verschillende Britse kranten.

Lapid bedankte Truss op Twitter voor het overwegen van de verhuizing, en voegde eraan toe: “We zullen het partnerschap tussen de landen blijven versterken.”

Truss, die door Lapid werd geprezen als een “grote vriend van Israël,” beloofde eerst de verplaatsing van de ambassade naar Jeruzalem te herzien in een brief die vorige maand naar de ‘Conservative Friends of Israel’ werd gestuurd.

Truss zei dat ze het “belang en de gevoeligheid” over de locatie begreep.

“Ik heb veel gesprekken gehad met mijn goede vriend premier Lapid over dit onderwerp. Dat erkennende, zal ik een verhuizing herzien om ervoor te zorgen dat we op de sterkste voet binnen Israël opereren,” schreef ze.

Voormalig president Donald Trump erkende Jeruzalem formeel als de hoofdstad van Israël en verplaatste de Amerikaanse ambassade in mei 2018 van Tel Aviv naar Jeruzalem, waarmee hij het eerste land werd dat de stap zette.

Guatemala, Honduras en Kosovo volgden dit voorbeeld.

Lapid en Truss bespraken tijdens hun ontmoeting ook de Iraanse nucleaire overeenkomst, en kwamen overeen dat er geen concessies meer mogen worden gedaan aan Teheran.

Lapid “benadrukte dat Israël verwacht dat er een langere en sterkere overeenkomst komt die een antwoord biedt op alle dreigingen van Iran”, aldus een bericht van zijn kantoor.

Lapid betuigde ook zijn medeleven met het overlijden van Koningin Elizabeth II, aldus de lezing.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has told her Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid that she is considering moving the British embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Truss raised the topic during a meeting with Lapid on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to British media reports.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said Truss informed Lapid “about her review of the current location of the British Embassy in Israel,” several UK newspapers reported.

Lapid thanked Truss on Twitter for considering the move, and added, “We will continue to strengthen the partnership between the countries.”

Truss, who Lapid hailed as a “great friend of Israel,” first pledged to review moving the embassy to Jerusalem in a letter sent last month to the Conservative Friends of Israel.

Truss said she understood the “importance and sensitivity” over its location.

“I’ve had many conversations with my good friend Prime Minister Lapid on this topic. Acknowledging that, I will review a move to ensure we are operating on the strongest footing within Israel,” she wrote.

Former President Donald Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocated the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May of 2018, becoming the first country to make the move.

Guatemala, Honduras, and Kosovo followed suit.

Lapid and Truss also discussed the Iranian nuclear deal in their meeting, and agreed that no more concessions should be offered to Tehran.

Lapid “emphasized that Israel’s expectation is the advancement of a longer and stronger deal that will provide a response to the full range of threats stemming from Iran,” a readout from his office said.

Lapid also expressed his condolences over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the readout said.
