In de aanloop van de vlaggen mars op Jeruzalemdag, zei Ofer Lieberman van Kibbutz Nir Am in de westelijke Negev: “Er is een gevoel van onbehagen in de omgeving van Gaza [Strook] en onder de boeren.”

“We hopen dat ze [Palestijnen in Gaza] onze velden zondag niet platbranden,” zei hij.

“We zijn eraan gewend om elke keer geraakt te worden als er iets gebeurt in het land, zelfs als het ver van ons vandaan is, en we zijn voortdurend alert. We hopen dat de mars in Jeruzalem niet uitloopt op een escalatie. Het is ons duidelijk dat elke verdwaalde kogel en dode terrorist ertoe kan leiden dat de situatie uit de hand loopt,” zei Lieberman.

Lt. Kol. (res.) Eyal Hajibi uit Netivot heeft de afgelopen 10 jaar gediend als veiligheidsofficier van de regionale raad.

Hij vertelde Israel Hayom: “Wij hier in de omgeving van Gaza bevinden ons in een gespannen toestand, die kan worden omschreven als in opperste staat van paraatheid. We zijn niet vergeten dat het nog maar een jaar geleden is dat Operatie Guardian of the Walls begon en dat gebeurde na het begin van de vlaggenmars. Wij zijn in die operatie bijzonder moeilijke gevechten aangegaan, waarbij de Palestijnen meer dan 5000 raketten hebben gelanceerd. Op grond van de ruime ervaring die wij hier in het randgebieden hebben opgedaan, begrijpen wij dat de volgende ronde zal beginnen waar de vorige ophield. Daarom zijn we op elk scenario voorbereid, en zullen we ervoor zorgen dat het operatiecentrum over alle nodige uitrusting beschikt en dat alle functionarissen in de complexen dit begrijpen en dienovereenkomstig handelen.”

De regionale raad van Shaar Hanegev staat voortdurend in contact met militaire functionarissen en wacht op instructies van de Israel Defense Forces en op zijn beoordeling van de situatie.

Hajibi zei dat “ondanks de dreigementen, er nog steeds geen significante beoordeling is van deze [IDF] functionarissen, maar als die er is, zullen we het op zondag weten. We zullen de relevante berichten doorgeven aan alle complexdirecteuren en raadsfunctionarissen en elke functionaris, zodat ze begrijpen dat we hier een escalatie kunnen ondergaan als gevolg van de situatie.”

Hajibi zei dat het feit dat de bewoners van de westelijke Negev de eerste slachtoffers zijn van elke escalatie, de situatie daar “ondraaglijk” heeft gemaakt.

“We hopen van harte dat we op een dag niet langer de gijzelaars zullen zijn van terroristische organisaties in Gaza en dat we onze kinderen hier in vrede kunnen opvoeden.”

In de tussentijd, en met een escalatie in het vooruitzicht, zei Hajibi dat de IDF niettemin de volledige steun heeft van de bewoners van de westelijke Negev.

“We zijn hier om de strijdkrachten alle tijd te geven die nodig is om de vrede te herstellen en zeker niet om een ronde te beëindigen zoals we die de afgelopen tien jaar hebben beëindigd, zonder afspraken en zonder schriftelijke dictaten,” zei hij.

“We hope they [Palestinians in Gaza] don’t burn our fields down on Sunday,” he said.

“We’re used to getting hit every time something happens in the country, even when it’s far away from us, and we’re constantly on alert. We hope the Jerusalem march won’t turn into an escalation. It’s clear to us that every errant bullet and dead terrorist can result in the situation spiraling out of control,” Lieberman said.

For the last 10 years, Lt. Col. (res.) Eyal Hajibi of Netivot has served as the regional council’s security officer.

He told Israel Hayom: “We here in the periphery are in a tense period that can be described as on peak alert. We haven’t forgotten that it was just one year ago that Operation Guardian of the Walls started and that happened following the start of the flag march. We embarked on particularly difficult fighting in that operation in which the Palestinians launched over 5,000 rockets. From the vast experience we have amassed here in the periphery, we understand that the next round will start where the last one left off. That’s why we are prepared for any scenario, and we will ensure the operations center has all the necessary equipment and all the officials in the complexes understand and act accordingly.”

The Shaar Hanegev Regional Council is in constant contact with military officials and is waiting for instructions from the Israel Defense Forces as well as for its assessment of the situation.

Hajibi said that “despite the threats, there is still no significant assessment from these [IDF] officials, but if there is, we will know on Sunday. We will relay the relevant messages to all the complex directors and council officials and every official so that they understand we could have an escalation here as a result of the situation.”

Hajibi said the fact that residents of the western Negev are the first victims of any escalation has made the situation there “intolerable.”

“We very much hope that one day, we will stop being the hostages of terrorist organizations in Gaza and be able to raise our children here in peace.”

In the meantime, and with an escalation likely, Hajibi said the IDF nevertheless had the full support of the residents of the western Negev.

“We’re here to give the military forces all the time necessary to restore the peace and certainly not to end a round the way we ended it over the last decade, without any agreements and without any written dictates,” he said.
